Sample Projects
- Drug Utilization Review Oversight and Management
Pharmaceutical Strategies, (PS) has worked with a state's Medicaid administrator to
run the Drug Utilization Review (DUR) program. This included managing a staff of
pharmacists who provide DUR for prior authorization-required medications, administering
monthly DUR committee meetings, analyzing utilization data to identify potentially
over-prescribed or inappropriately-prescribed medications, and providing physician profile
reports.
- Monitoring Regulatory and Government Affairs
A national pharmaceutical company retained PS to monitor legislative and administrative
issues of interest to that company. PS will prepare written summaries of those issues,
provide advice as requested, assist in the review of testimony, track the progress of
various initiatives, collect information from government agencies and interest groups,
coordinate communications and interactions with state officials and interest groups, and
appear before legislative and administrative bodies on behalf of that company.
- Pharmacy Services Audits
After a reported controlled substance loss, a hospital contacted PS to perform routine
site inspections, audits and review of all aspects of pharmacy services related to
controlled substance management, delivery, administration, record keeping and disposition.
A nursing home contacted PS after the Department of Public Health directed them to engage
an outside, independent pharmacy service. PS performed a full review of all patient
profiles and medication orders to ensure their accuracy, prepared a report of the findings
and provided recommendations for correction.
- Design of Pharmacy Services
In an effort to streamline pharmacy services for a distributed correctional system, PS
evaluated the needs of each facility, met with all key personnel, analyzed current
resources, reviewed budget considerations and then designed a centralized pharmacy
services program. The centralized program was implemented and is still adding facilities
for its services.
- Expert Pharmacy Consulting
A law firm retained PS on behalf of their client who was seeking regulatory relief from a
Board of Registration in Pharmacy (BRP) to allow the client to continue using their
current dispensing procedure. PS reviewed the procedure, provided an assessment report
regarding compliance with applicable state laws and regulations. In addition, PS drafted
a waiver for the BRP, attended the BRP meetings with the client, and is assisting in the
efforts geared toward a legislative solution to the issue.
- Provider Education Programs
PS is working with a managed care plan to develop a provider education program for Depression. It includes information on signs and symptoms, a simple screening tool, primary care counseling, care management, when to refer to a specialist, medications, case studies, treatment guidelines, and patient education.
- Modeling Health Care Delivery
PS assessed the pharmacy services at 20 State run hospitals to determine the needs of the facilities, resources currently available, and budget considerations. From the assessment, a new system was designed, developed and implemented.
